Snitch (2013) Synopsis :

John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson), owner of a construction company, receives a call from his ex-wife Sylvie Collins. His estranged son Jason (Rafi Gavron) is being charged for distribution of narcotics; while Jason is not actually a dealer, his friend set him up in a sting operation to reduce his own sentence after being caught. Jason's charges carry a minimum of 10 years in prison. John feels responsible because he was not there for his son, and he becomes desperate as he realizes that Jason may be killed before he finishes his prison sentence.

Using his connections, John arranges several meetings with the local US Attorney Joanne Keeghan (Susan Sarandon), who is running a very aggressive anti-drug campaign to bolster her chances for election to Congress. Joanne agrees to reduce Jason's sentence if John can inform on a drug dealer, but states that he'll receive little help from her and that the risk will be all his. Story: Construction company owner John Matthews learns that his estranged son, Jason, has been arrested for drug trafficking. Facing an unjust prison sentence for a first time offender courtesy of mandatory minimum sentence laws, Jason has nothing to offer for leniency in good conscience. Desperately, John convinces the DEA and the opportunistic DA Joanne Keeghan to let him go undercover to help make arrests big enough to free his son in return. With the unwitting help of an ex-con employee, John enters the narcotics underworld where every move could be his last in an operation that will demand all his resources, wits and courage to survive. I have never been much of a fan of The Rock. My love of professionalwrestling tapered off around the time I was about 15 years old, andthat was before The Rock's heydey. His movies (the ones I have seen)have been marginal at best in my opinion. But for a guy who was usheredinto the field of acting to capitalize on his popularity and not to winAcademy Awards, he has come a long way from The Scorpion King. What Iliked about "Snitch" is it's the anti-action movie. I expected a movielike the terrible "Last Stand" starring Ah-nold Schwarzenegger. Iexpected fabricated car chases and shootouts where the bad guys must beshooting blanks because they are unable to shoot the good guy even whenthey have a clear shot. I expected scenes where The Rock would beat up10 guys who all take turns coming at him instead of simply jumping him.But "Snitch" was different. It's a story of the lengths a father willgo to help his son. I don't want to give away any spoilers but he goesvery far. The Rock -- he's credited as Dwayne Johnson (I guess soviewers take the movie seriously) -- is very believable and doeshimself proud with some consistent good acting. He shows thetrepidation and vulnerability of a father who puts his life on the lineto save his son, who is imprisoned after committing a dumb crime. Butthe actor who steals the movie is John Bernthal, who plays an ex-contrying to live an honest life but is dragged back to the dark side inorder to help The Rock, whom he works for doing construction. MichaelKenneth Williams will forever be known as "Omar" and is typecast butdoes a good turn as a drug dealer. The other supporting cast, includingSusan Sarandon as a district attorney, are excellent. "Snitch" moves ata deliberate pace, which gives it more of a natural and believablefeel. The few action sequences are good and do not seem overlyexaggerated. I will go out on a limb and say this movie will not benominated for Best Picture, but compared with the junk I've seen so farthis year (including the latest Die Hard), I recommend "Snitch".

I'm going to be somewhat vague about the plot to not give awayanything.

My wife and I decided we wanted to go see a movie, both of us enjoyaction movies and both of us enjoy Dwayne Johnson as an actor. Neitherof use really thought it was going to be anything but a bunch ofexplosions, gun fights, and ass-whippings. I was amazingly surprised athow far Johnson has come in his acting ability since Mummy 2/WalkingTall. He showed real and believable emotions in his interactions withhis "family" and others. Jon Bernthal was the perfect choice for hisrole. He showed even with this supporting role he is ready to be amajor lead in my opinion. Susan Sarandon played her job as a careerpolitician to the absolute limit.

If you are looking for a generic action movie, go see Die-Hard. If youwant to see the story of how far parents will go for their children seethis movie.

This movie marks the departure of Dwayne Johnson from action actor todramatic actor and the transformation works. Johnson demonstrates asurprising aptitude for dramatic acting as his character struggles witha number of distressing issues. The problem with the movie is thestory. It's premise is implausible. The main character's son is bustedon drug charges and he is in fact guilty, which makes him a far lesssympathetic character. Nevertheless, that doesn't stop his father,played by Johnson, from coming to his son's assistance, albeit asunbelievable as it, and the entire movie hinges on the audience havingto believe that the son is a victim, which he is not. If a movie needsa victim, then the victim should in fact be a victim. Anotherinteresting character is the drug dealer played by Benjamin Bratt whoplays the role effectively. Susan Sarandon and Barry Pepper alsoprovide excellent performances as an ambitious DA and an undercovervice police officer respectively. Despite the flaws in the story, thisis still a good movie and one that is worth watching.
