Sure, you could go and spend x amount of your hard-earned dollars to goand see the most recent blockbuster playing in an overcrowded theaternear you. That's your every right. But have you ever considered some ofthose lesser known names? Some that aren't on the Hollywood A-list? Youknow, one of those movies you come across on Netflix but won't watchbecause you don't know who made it/stars in it? You might be surprisedwhat is out there. To which proves this little film. Shot in a mere 8days with a budget which is a fraction of a typical blockbuster, Houseof Bad focuses on three siblings returning to their elderly home afterone of the sisters steals a large suitcase filled with heroin from herboyfriend. Little do they know, the house that was once their childhoodhome, is now confronting the girls with a cruel past.
With a few eerie scenes, underlined by a great soundtrack (courtesy ofTerry Huud) and several great suspense moments you could easilyclassify this as a thriller/mild horror. Yet the film has more tooffer. The characters are well explained, with the family history as acentral plot to the movie, you can find yourself caring for thecharacters. Director/co-writer Jim Towns clearly did a great job makingthis, especially considering the ridiculous small amount of time andmoney that was put into this.
If you get a chance to watch this, go for it. It's a great 1.36h ride.

Bias out front. I know the director and I shot stills for this flick.Having said that I wasn't on set and I didn't read he script or knowthe story going into watching the film.
About 10 minutes in and I figured I knew what would play out and about30 minutes in I had to change that assessment. By the time the movieended I found myself glad that I was wrong both times.
It wasn't your typical "gotcha" flick that tries to waste your timewith swelling music and false starts. Nor was it a simple heist/revengestory. There's more depth and character development than you get in alot of movies these days.
I enjoyed the flick mostly because it was nice to see a truly lowbudget film, not some multi-million dollar "independent" film, keep myinterest until the end. I tend to space out when a movie bores me or istoo predicable and neither applies with "House of Bad".
Jim Townes did a great job here and I'm glad to have seen it. Toexplain my "6" rating. That's the "I Liked it" rating. 8 would havebeen one of my favorites and 10 would be a perfect movie. I only usemultiples of 2 for my ratings. I'm not going to blow smoke because Ithink Jim is a great guy, I liked the film and rated it accordingly.

Three girls, trapped in a house. Low budget. Predictable...
That's all I thought this movie would amount to at five minutes in...but was I ever wrong!
House of Bad is a tale of three sisters that steal a load of drugs froma respective boyfriend dealer, and seek to hide out in their childhoodhome while the heat cools down. They haven't been hiding out long whenthings start to go awry...
What I thought would inevitably break down into a cheap slasher/stalkermovie quietly, surprisingly evolved into a well executed practice ingood filmmaking. The story involved real characters in believablesituations; the dialog was great and well-executed, the use of FX wassparse as to enhance the story, rather than supplant it, and the actingwas flat-out good!
The budget was low, but the execution was great. There's a verycinematic feel to the picture, and a very good, timely score thatdoesn't hit you over the head for effect. You get the impression thatthis film didn't know it was low budget or independent, so it didn'tpull any punches in fit and finish.
Possibly the best part of House of Bad is the surprising turns thestory takes. This film really capitalizes on nuances and the behaviorsof the human psyche, and goes places most films don't. Good pacingbrings you to a great climax and the little touches of plot that sneakin at the end are haunting.
More thriller than horror, better than most, and really satisfying.Well done!
